The man who opened the door to his house in the southern state of Rajasthan last month by shooting them dead was obsessed with a secret that has baffled authorities and the local police for years.
An investigation is underway to determine whether the man, who has not been identified, has mental health problems, according to a police report.
He has been living in a residential area in the town of Vellore for a number of years, but had not been able to commit the heinous act, the police said in the report.
Police said the man killed his estranged wife, son and daughter in their beds, leaving them in the house to die.
A neighbor who was watching the house from her house saw the body of his wife lying on a bed, while his daughter’s body was in a pile on the ground.
“The deceased has been mentally unstable, but he is not a threat to the public,” the report said.
The man, identified as Bhaskar Kumar, reportedly went to the house on the evening of May 12, 2017, and shot his wife and son dead inside.
He then fled to the nearby town of Seshar in the nearby state of Maharashtra, police said.
A post-mortem examination revealed the bodies of his daughter, who was 18, and son, who were 12, had been burnt to death, the report added.
Police suspect the man has been taking care of the two young children in Seshars family home.
